Quest Software Buys Data Manager Erwin

2021-01-05

Quest Software has acquired big data management specialist Erwin Inc., upgrading the buyer’s data toolset aimed at application deployment with regulatory compliance.

Quest, Aliso Viejo, Calif., said Tuesday (Jan. 5) it acquired Erwin from Parallax Capital Partners, a California-based private equity firm. Terms of the transaction, that closed on Dec. 31, 2020, were not disclosed.

Erwin, Melville, NY, specializes in helping IT administrators thread the needle between ensuring enterprise data governance while allowing business users to leverage big data. Along with about 3,500 customers in North America, Europe, the Middle East and the Asian-Pacific, the acquisition gives Quest Software a suite of data modeling, metadata management and data intelligence as well as business process modeling tools.

Erwin’s data modeling platform is designed to ease application development by wrangling structured and unstructured formats from multiple sources. The modeler also is intended to simplify migration of legacy files to data lakes and cloud data stores.

Meanwhile, its data intelligence suite tracks down and classifies scattered data sets, identifying sensitive data and who has access. “A clear understanding of metadata informs data governance and ensures compliance with an increasing number of data use regulations,” Quest Software noted.

Erwin will be integrated with Quest’s Information Systems and Management (ISM) unit that includes its database management, data protection and unified endpoint management platforms. Those products include Toad, aimed primarily at managing cloud databases, and Foglight, a monitoring tool for tracking database performance within on-premise, virtual and cloud infrastructure.

“Data has never been more important to our customers than now, and organizations are building data-driven cultures, democratizing the use of data and modernizing their overall data strategies,” said Heath Thompson, president and general manager of Quest’s ISM business unit.

“Enterprise data initiatives bring new operational and governance needs, and Quest is now uniquely positioned to help customers address those needs before they become major challenges,” Thompson added.

“Quest and Erwin will continue to deliver database tools aimed at helping companies know their data, alleviating concerns about where and how their data is used,” said Patrick Nichols, CEO of Quest Software.

Erwin announced expanded collaboration with Microsoft late last year that includes data modeling support for data warehousing and analytics on Azure Synapse.
